Reading this book was such a cool experience, and honestly felt a little like being let in on a secret. Being from the US rather than the Canadian intended audience, I was recommended this book while on vacation and borrowed the eBook from my local library. Hanako Muraoka's story is compelling from start to finish, and along the way includes details of Japanese history from her lifetime that are accessible without background but are also gems to me having studied this period some myself. I feel honored to have been given a window into the life of this extraordinary woman

This is much more than about the translator of Anne - it is a history of Japan from the late 1800s through war and up to 1967, and the role women and specifically Hanako played in this time. She was a fascinating women.
