I really enjoyed this book. The writing is well done and flows nicely. An interesting plot advance device is used to basically tell you the story from the beginning and the end at the same time. Only it's not really finished, of course.

My one complaint is that the main character, Kvothe, has entirely too much intelligence, too much luck, too much cleverness, too much musical talent, just too much of everything good and noble. At times, it does induce a bit of eye-rolling. Especially since Kvothe is suppose to only be about 16. Even a genius should have a bit more insecurities at that age. His only insecurity about anything is women and sometimes money. The supporting characters of his friends and Masters are far more interesting and colorful.

I also really enjoyed the world. I wouldn't call it unique, because the elements are definitely familiar (a blend of science and magic and maybe a bit of equivalent exchange), but they've been put together in a unique manner. I would say it falls somewhere between Ursula K LeGuin's EarthSea and Piers Anthony Phaze series.

A tad too long for my taste. I didn't actually liked it that much when I read it the first time but I'll be rereading this sooner rather than later. So hopefully my view about this would change. *cross fingers

A pesar de ser un libro denso el autor escribe de manera que no se te hace pesado o por lo menos en su mayor parte (a mi hubo partes que se me hicieron más largas que otras).
La historia está llena de magia, misterio, y nos encontramos de todo: risas, lágrimas y tensión. Ideal para los amantes del género fantástico.
Tengo muchas ganas de leer el siguiente libro y saber qué es lo que sucede para encontrarnos a Kvothe en ese escenario del presente desde el que narra toda su historia.

This is pretty solid Swords & Sorcery. The framing story works really well to manage pace and to mitigate some of the Mary-Sueish tendencies of the main character. The magic system seems to work fairly well and the author is judicious about explaining where it's all going. It avoids a fair amount of the more annoying cliches, not least that however awesome the hero is, he doesn't (yet) seem to be a "chosen one" and so far shows no signs of having to save the whole world. I look forward to following the rest of this series.

Found it rather patchy. Goes from moody poetic epic to boys own adventure and back a little too much for my liking. Will probably try the next one at some point.
