NANA is a story that took some warming up to. When my sister first put me on to it, I was fairly dismissive of the on-the-surface romantic trappings.
"Oh, great, another romantic anime that my sister will gus about then hate a couple months later." But she never finished it, and I dropped it shortly thereafter. A couple years later, I decided to give it another try. Through the ups and downs, I stuck with it and was rewarded with a genuine exploration of a romantic friendship between two women who may or may not remain friends by the end of the story.
This is my first foray into the manga, a story that remains unfinished, and the anime kept fairly close to the original story. Nana K is an excitable, naive girl who wants the romance of the stories. Most people can't stand her childishness or take advantage of her kindness. Nana O is an orphan in a 'complicated' relationship with a former band mate, and strives to become a rock star performing for millions.
They are as different as two women can be, but the gimmick behind sharing a name really does wonders to contrast their differences and similarities. This is a beautiful start so far. I hope I can reach the end.
