I listened to the audio on this book. So good, so descriptive. The different voices of the narrator were very effective.

- Drags in parts, which may have been a stylistic choice because it seems to happen more during the winter scenes which is the most boring and monotonous season for the characters.
- I like the bittersweet ending where everything isn't perfect, but life ends up good for Leni.
- Not a gripping suspense book by any means, but definitely a good luck at how domestic violence can impact a family. I like how they don't make the abuser all bad, he has some good qualities just like how it normally is in real life.

This book was disappointing after reading the Nightingale. Many of the characters felt more like stereotypes and and much of it felt melodramatic. Some of the language was truly beautiful, but other times it was so overdone that it no longer really resembled what it was supposed to describe. Multiple times in her descriptions of winter weather, I thought, she has never lived somewhere like this and that couldn't happen that way. I applaud the author for tackling some serious issues of PTSD, the Vietnam War, domestic abuse, life in the wild and traumatic injuries, and living in Alaska as a homesteader, but it really felt like the author was working to a deadline and did not have time to truly develop her story and her themes.

I've always wanted to visit the great state of Alaska. To read about the beauty and the hardships of the people within the state was amazing. The character development, the immense sadness and even greater story of love and happiness made this book amazing. It was powerful and moving to hear of the lives within this book. Reading this book made it come alive. Definitely one of my all time favorites. Beautifully written.
