The build-up took really long and it was a sudden climax and drop off in the last 2 chapters. To be honest, I didn't know where the book was going at all except that I read it as a recommendation of a Christian influencer to read. Despite that, I really like the themes of this book, namely, the theme of GRACE, as a Christian reader.
There were some plot holes in the ending but I get what the author was conveying. I feel like she could have focused more on the relationship throughout the years between Scotland and Cooper.

An absolutely beautiful look into the happiness and pain of being a parent. The book dares you to ask, "how far would you really go to protect the ones you love? And are you actually protecting them, or yourself?"

After maybe third chapter I was really hooked, the story is engaging and feels real.

Overall I enjoyed it, but the ending was somewhat disappointing.

Big ending SPOILER :

Cooper needs professional help, he might be dangerous even for his own daughter (I think), but not a sweet sweet librarian and a cabin life… this time the happy ending didn’t do it for me

Boring, so many slow/irrelevant bits, not thrilling at all. The only thing that made me emotional was Finch running after Cooper. Other than that, I was really disappointed with this book.

This book isn't really what you think it'll be.
I went in expecting a thriller and some serious dark secrets and maybe horror elements. Not so much.

This book is about Cooper and his daughter, Finch who live together off the grid in a cabin in the woods. They've been there for 8 years since Finch was a baby. Cooper keeps their existence pretty secret for good reasons. Cooper's friend Jake always visits once per year to bring them supplies. This book gives a peak into their lives on a year in which Jake doesn't show up and a series of events jeopordizes the secrecy of their lives. It's not a thriller. There's no horror. It's just about a man coming to terms with the mistakes of his past and trying to figure out how to create a worthy future for his daughter.

Is it a good book? Yeah, its fine.

It didn't blow my mind but the characters were likeable.

I'm not a huge fan of literary fiction which is why I didn't rate it higher.

I really wanted to like this but it was very boring and not well constructed. The writing is like reading a journal, everything is described by the father's perspective, which didn't make any sense. It would have been a lot more interesting if we were reading from Finch/the daughter's POV.

A cozy read that has a terrible ending with massive plot holes.
