I’ve read two other books with a very similar plot to this one and I loved the direction this one took the most. It was concise, and I thought the characters were really well fleshed out. The story had its heart in the right place, didn’t go for cheap plot extremities for shock value and also I was weeeeeping at the end

Boring, so many slow/irrelevant bits, not thrilling at all. The only thing that made me emotional was Finch running after Cooper. Other than that, I was really disappointed with this book.

This book isn't really what you think it'll be.
I went in expecting a thriller and some serious dark secrets and maybe horror elements. Not so much.

This book is about Cooper and his daughter, Finch who live together off the grid in a cabin in the woods. They've been there for 8 years since Finch was a baby. Cooper keeps their existence pretty secret for good reasons. Cooper's friend Jake always visits once per year to bring them supplies. This book gives a peak into their lives on a year in which Jake doesn't show up and a series of events jeopordizes the secrecy of their lives. It's not a thriller. There's no horror. It's just about a man coming to terms with the mistakes of his past and trying to figure out how to create a worthy future for his daughter.

Is it a good book? Yeah, its fine.

It didn't blow my mind but the characters were likeable.

I'm not a huge fan of literary fiction which is why I didn't rate it higher.

Beautiful and haunting handling of isolation and how we are the ones who often punish ourselves the harshest. I loved the way Cunningham Grant told the story, jumping back and forth between musings on the past and what was happening in the present. Especially loved the exploration of the idea of grace - this'll make sense when you finish the book.

Originally I'd planned a 3.5 star rating, but upon finishing it, a four star feels more in line with how I feel having finished it.

This book was interesting because it was completely different then how I imagined it would be. It wasn't bad, but it seemed as though it was trying to send a religious message without explicitly claiming and owning it. It felt a little lost and misguided, and paired with the fact that it had many cliches it wasn't my favorite.
