A Coretta Scott King Award winner published during the height of the Black Power movement. This book connects to the call back to Africa and the roots of Black peoples around the world. It's an extended dream sequence of a child's flight to their ancestral lands and their long-lost ancestors.
I keep switching between a 3 and a 4 star review for this, because I don't see it being read much in the mid-10s, when most CSK picture books are now focusing on real-world events or applicable lessons from modern times or recent history. This more fanciful tale doesn't seem like such a good fit for a modern child. However, at the same time, perhaps I'm just not seeing the proper point of view, since this isn't my heritage? So I'll leave it at 4, for now, just because I am so unsure.

Beautiful illustrations accompanying lovely text. One spot the text is difficult to read, due to the charcoal illustrations and the font color blending. Otherwise, a wonderful picture book. Timeless.

Absolutely stunning book with phenomenal illustrations - the kind of illustrations that I would get lost in for hours as a child.
