I am so sad this didn’t work for me! I was hoping it would be as thrilling as Jurassic Park, but unfortunately I was pretty bored all throughout until I finally completely lost interest. I do like the setting, but there were multiple times I wanted more action and less education about the middle ages.

Crichton!!

PT: 23/23 list, sci fi spring (January is spring now, I’ve just decided), CRICHTON!!, medieval setting

WIL
1) MEDIEVAL ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS A N D ARCHAEOLOGY MY BELOVEDS

2) give me one (1) rock climbing/building scaling woman and sword fighting man and I’ll be enamored forever

3) realism. Crichton, sir, you’re a master of world building and establishing realistic scenarios.

WIDL
1) Crichton needs to speak with a real life woman. Just any real life human woman. Those descriptions, honestly. I can’t tell if Crichton wrote it with the deliberate intention of being obnoxiously old-school bc of the whole male/female divides of the earlier setting represented here OR if he just honestly didn’t realize what he was doing.

Neutral ground
1) when sci-fi toes the line of fantasy, authors have to be verrryy careful of what they explain with “science.” Crichton really walks this tightrope line with a great deal of confidence in all of his books, and this one… this one might just push a little too far into fantasy that attempts to explain itself with scientific jargon. I haven’t decided my opinion on it yet, but it’s a close one.

A good, fun read, but I do think that it is on the bottom end of the now five Crichton books that I have read. I really enjoyed when outlandish medieval stuff happened, almost out of nowhere, but I do think that some of the book was jumpy. I have yet to see the movie, but my fan cast for some of the characters include: young Adam Baldwin as Chris, Jean Reno as Marek, and current Kevin Costner as the professor.

Also, shout out to the lovey audiobook narrated by the very entertaining John Bedford Lloyd, which I used to continue the book while on the road. I’ve had plenty of narrators turn me off of an audiobook, but he is on the shortlist of those that have hooked me in.

Honestly, I just wanted it to be better. I loved how the language barrier felt like a realistic issue for time travel. Still had a tough time really getting into the story unfortunately.
