Not as good as the first book but better than expected. I thought reading from Donatella’s perspective wouldn’t be enjoyable but I grew to like her more than I thought I would. My biggest issue with this is actually the gaping plot holes it creates in the first, which was already teetering on the edge of being nonsensical. If you can pretend that the continuity issues don’t exist this might be a 4 or 5 star read for you, but, alas, you would be a bigger person than me.

i really disliked the fact that this book’s setting wasn’t the same as the previous one, i really wish it had been more “magical” like i expected it would. the new element of the Fates and the new characters were great tho, it would’ve been better if the book focused more on that rather than the horrible romance between Tella and Dante, i hope he fucking dies or something.

I typically love second books in trilogies, and this book is no exception. I love the mystery surrounding Caraval Master Legend's true identity, and the lengths that Tella will go to in order to retrieve it. Garber once again sucks you into the world of Caraval, where you are forced to question everything as you try to remember it's only a game.
In addition to trying to unmask Legend, Tella is forced to confront some of the trauma that comes with her and Scarlett's mother leaving them when they were little. Along the way, she uncovers more truth than she bargained for, and has to decide how to move forward with this new information.
Overall, I love the way that Garber expands the world of Caraval and digs deeper into many of the characters' backstories. Legendary is full of twists and turns and surprises, which make for quite the page turner. I recommend this book without reservation.

The first book felt like it could stand alone except for the epilogue, but the second two books feel a lot more tied together and... bigger. Like there's more at stake--the fate of the whole world in fact. Instead of almost the whole story taking place inside the game of Caraval, we get to see a lot more of the fantasy world the author created in this book. More of its locations, history, culture, legends, like The Fates that used to rule the world before being trapped in a deck of cards...
But are they really legends, or are they as real and illusive as the man Legend himself?
I was surprised by the twists and turns, and I kept asking, "How in the world are they going to fix all this!?!?!" Which of course kept me turning the pages, and then grabbing the last book as fast as possible!
This book is told from Tella's POV. Tella is pretty much the opposite of her sister, outgoing, fearless (some might say a little TOO fearless), and rushed right in to adventure without giving it a second thought, well, until it's too late.
The one thing I simply do NOT get is the whole "falling in love with the bad boy" trope. Like, why would you want someone who you're pretty sure you can't trust and who might be the villain of the story? How is it exciting to be with someone who might stick with you or might give you up to the enemy? Am I the only one confused by this?
Also, there's the whole blood thing. Like, drinking blood and unlocking things with blood and biting people...

Anyways. I really liked this story. The world was so real and layered with magic, I couldn't help rooting for the characters, even the aforementioned "bad boy," and I couldn't stop reading!
But are they really legends, or are they as real and illusive as the man Legend himself?
