Takes the idea of assembling a rag-tag crew for a quest and makes them more rag-tag than you could have possibly envisaged.

I highly recommend reading it but with caveats. It is the Wild West at its wildest and the characters, story and events reflect that. Brutal, violent, racist and with more than a suggestion of the trauma suffered, especially by the female characters. But if you can manage the harshness, the evocative prose, superb characters and gallows humour is highly rewarding.

I started reading (audio) this book when I saw it will be a movie with Peter Dinklage and Juliet Lewis, and it was good/engaging. Shortie, who will be played by Dinklage, gives speeches similar to Tyrion Lannister- those were very enjoyable. However, the “n” word is in this book a lot. I hope the movie doesn’t use it as much, because it really is not enjoyable to hear it so/too many times.

Thoroughly enjoyable coming of age western with a healthy dose of graphic violence and a charming found family vibe.

Quick, simple, to the point. It’ll be a great movie.

This novel is almost an homage to True Grit, with its young hero setting out on a journey to find his sister who has been captured by some really evil guys. He collects a rather quirky posse to assist him, including a huge wild hog, promising his land as a reward.

The language is brilliant, with lots of Americanisms thrown in. Lansdale's descriptive talents shine here. I felt as if I was right there with them. His characters are equally brilliant, Shorty being my favorite, but they are all wonderful. Even the evil guys, as they are really, really, inhumanely evil.

Fair warning to those who a bit squeamish: this story has quite a bit of detailed gore, told matter of factly, as you would imagine Texans would tell it back in the early 20th century.
