the first half of this book was boring and annoying. the main character often responds to something someone says to her by repeating one of the words in their sentence back as a question and occasionally does this several times in a single dialogue. it's pretty insufferable. and her life seems pointless and empty. she has no personal thoughts, no ambitions, and makes no decisions. It is depressing and boring. Part of her backstory is revealed in the middle of the book in a very unexpected and graphic way, and then you start to understand why she is the way she is. Her struggles with depression and alcoholism invoke some empathy for her character, and her emergence from the darker times in the book is really rewarding. i read a review saying that this book did not have a happy ending and i disagree with that completely.
just because the romance doesn't happen doesn't mean it's not a happy ending.
i actually really enjoyed the ending and i thought it had a very hopeful energy, like the rest of her life is going to be better than it had been before, because she has spoken up for herself and accepted who she is.

no one can write about humanity quite like kawakami does. her prose is stunning, and this book has left a gaping hole in my heart i don't quite understand how to fill. at the same time, i feel complete, and seen.
