Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy by Heather Ann Thompson

This is INSANE. How did this all happen during my lifetime and I didn't know any details until now? I get it that I was just a kid when the uprising happened, but the lawsuits went on for 35 years. Where was I? I am so glad to have this information now. I feel like a huge gaping hole in my understanding of a devastating and important event and its repercussions has been filled. Thompson contextualizes the historical record and, all in all, this is a compelling and important book. Read this. It deserves every prize it won.

Five stars for content, thoroughness, depth of investigation, etc. One star for being kinda really dry. So... three stars on average?
