It is not the dead who lose hope when a death sentence is passed, he breathed. No no - it is the living.
It took me four years to finish this book. It wasn't the most challengingly worded, or the most complex piece I've ever read, but I always came back to it even after putting it down for long periods of time. I'm not sure why it took me so long, but I feel immense relief in having finished it.
The End of the Day offers countless rich and nuanced stories of living. The writing style took some getting used to – the disjointed sentences and unquoted dialogue – but once I had learnt the rhythm of it, the picture that was painted was that much more detailed.
This is a piece that will stay with me for a long time, and it is for that reason I have rated it this highly. The enormous effort it took to read was well worth the wait.
Graphic: Torture, War, and Injury/Injury detail
