Such a wild ride. I loved the creativity of the world building and the commentary on how humans have a habit of destroying the environments that sustain them. I also enjoyed the casual queerness and that is built  into the society. The way that their families are structured in a way that both allows and encourages polyamory in a matriarchal society was very interesting. While I enjoyed it, I found it difficult to connect with the characters very deeply. I found them to be very childish and stupid much of the time. To be fair, they are younger teenagers (though it is unclear for me how old they actually are), but as a reader I found a lot of the characters actions to be frustrating and questionable. The plot was also a bit all over the place. There was a lot that happened and lots of different subplots. Because of this, I feel that some character development was sacrificed, leading to the second half of the book feeling like the characters matured super quickly with no traceable development. It also left the main romance feel rushed in the end.
SpoilerI feel like Adala forgave Sesca too easily and there was not a lot of reckoning with the things that she had done on Sesca’s part. Adala just kind of decided she was willing to risk getting hurt again.
Sometimes it felt like there were time skips but I couldn’t tell how much time had passed, if any. Time was an amorphous thing in this book. That being said, the pacing felt fine and kept me reading more.
Spoiler also, alien integration?? This girl just got her period and then she fricken gives birth??? To a tentacle alien??? Why was that necessary?

'Escaping Exodus' by Nicky Drayden is a creative science fiction novel that tells of a matriarchal society living aboard a large space beast.
We follow Seske and Adalla, two girls within this society. Seske is air to the matriarchal society while Adalla is a beast worker, who helps excavate and prepare the beast. From two separate stations, they begin to fall in love as they learn more about the truth of their society and their host.
Drayden has created a fascinating world that hinges on the parasitic relationship between a matriarchal society and the beast that they call home. The world building in this book is fascinating and incredibly unique. Drayden pairs this with a dual perspective that weaves between two very different characters. By following the heir to the throne and a beast worker, we get to see different parts of this world and the inequality that is inherent with it. Through the matriarchal society, Drayden makes the inequalities and harms of our patriarchal society stand out as the society in the book holds many of the same issues, just gender swapped.
This book is rife with body horror elements and bodily fluids, which I think is crucial to know going in. Drayden balances the more nauseating elements of this world with their evocative prose to create the engaging world. I am fascinated to see where this story goes next and I will definitely be checking out more of Drayden's work.

This book was the squishiest of sci fi from the very beginning, and it was great. Such an interesting and well-built out world, my favorite kind of likable characters that make very questionable decisions, and a plot that progresses very rapidly. Definitely a book for those who enjoy sci fi and space travel outside the realm of technology. The ending went from fast to blink-and-you'll-miss-it, and was a little too quickly wrapped up for it to become a new favorite. One of the easiest books I have read to fall into.

This book says its a sci-fi/fantasy, but it's horror. A very dark horror. It's probably one of the most disturbing things I've read in a long time. I honestly can't put together a coherent sentence to describe how I feel about this book. Read at your own risk!

It's a fun, past-paced read that delves into repairing harm (if possible), the cost of justice, class divides and gender. The whole, reverse-sexism was an interesting take on the society as a whole, but I found the alternative family structure of 9 parents for every one child the most interesting world-building aspect (even if I'm still a little fuzzy on every parents' exact role in the family structure). Even the living-fish ship wasn't as interesting as all of that.

The gist 📚: Surviving inside of space beasts is not easy, especially when you're a member of the working class and risk your life every day to make life on the beast possible in the first place. Seske is the heir to the noble bloodline that rules her people. She has to play her cards carefully if she wants to take over in a few years. When she discovers a fatal secret within the beast, everything changes.

For readers looking for 💕: Vivid sci-fi worlds, complex friendships, assassination and espionage, creative survivalist societies, something a bit dark, bipoc characters, powerful women, and LGBTQ characters.

My thoughts 💭: I enjoyed seeing the contrast between the lives of royal Seske and her best friend (and crush) Nyla. The world building in this book is incredibly vivid as well. Maybe not the best read for fairly squeamish people.
