Normally I don't read self-published books because you can usually tell there is a lack of editorial process. This book was in my library  and was listed as a recommendation for readers who like Marissa Meyer's Winter, so I didn't realize it was self-published when I checked it out.

The lack of margins and the unusual formats at the beginning and ending were off-putting, but the writing was fantastic. The juxtaposition of styles throughout the book was hysterical (for example, a dragon's hoard displayed with tastefully recessed lighting).

A sweet, light urban fantasy featuring Julius, a "nice" dragon shifter and Marcy, a thaumaturgic mage. Set in the Detroit Free Zone, a dystopian version of Detroit with the old city topped by a futuristic and fancy modern city.

I happened to start reading it on a day I went to downtown Detroit, went over the Ambassador bridge, and collected my niece in the university district. I love the inadvertent connection!

I read this as part of the SBTB Hufflepuff/Slytherin romance list. Julius is definitely a Hufflepuff, but Marcy is smack-dab in the heart of Ravenclaw Tower with some Gryffindor tendencies. She's a brave academic. No Slytherin there, but the entire rest of Julius' family are definitely Slytherins.

Themes: dragons, magic, dystopian city, Detroit, first love

After reading her newer work, it's interesting to go back to the dragons series. I feel like I'm filling in information- this is slower-paced and, I think, suffers a little for it. But still an enjoyable read.

I absolutely loved this book! It grabbed me from the first page. If you've ever been the underdog, or the kid who was always picked last for the team, then you'll recognize yourself in Julius.
