I'm reading through these again. I can't believe I never rated this in Goodreads, but I'll try to review as I go.

A much better collection than The Adventures; some of these stories show that Mr Holmes can make mistakes. Unfortunately, as Holmes moves into the third dimension, Watson flattens out somewhat. This collection culminates in the Final Problem, the classic mystery at Reichenbach Falls (or in German - Reichenbachfall). A solid 4½ stars.

Whose voice do you hear when you read these stories, has to be Basil Rathbone for me.

While i love Sherlock Holmes, i felt these stories all seemed a bit short, each one coming in at around 20ish pages. I know they are all short stories and were originally published in a magazine, perhaps i have been spoilt recently with the excellent BBC series, and the surprisingly good US version too, but need a bit more meat in my stories these days, doesn't give me much hope for the future volumes of short stories i haven't got around to reading yet, but i have the complete boxset, so they will be read!

That being said each episode here displays the ingeniously enjoyable deductive reasoning employed by our sleuth, and also show a lighter side to him. I felt Moriarty got a bit of a short introduction, and the inevitable conclusion to the book isn't as shocking as it was at the time as there are further volumes.

It hits harder when you remember the author intended this collection to be the last of the series.
