While this novel has a linear structure, its moment-to-moment prose is meandering and verbose. It's initially interesting, but very quickly becomes a bit of a chore to read.
Some of the narrative voice's misapprehensions are so absurd that they are rendered unintentionally comedic; this novel is nowhere near as depressing as people seem to think it is, mainly on account of how hard it is to relate to the narrator.
