I decided to read The Screaming Staircase after watching the Netflix adaptation.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this book and I think Netflix did a really good job at adapting the series.

I love the characters of Lockwood, Lucy and George and how they complement each other. I also found the world building and concept was executed really well and with so much depth.

love this series — this isn’t my first time reading this book. The whole vibes of ghost hunting are so neat, and the universe is so fleshed out… argh I’m obsessed

Not for me. I couldn’t really get into the story or characters. I found the body shaming and fatphobic descriptions of George to be  offensive and unnecessary. The main character literally says she wants to physically harm him just because of how he looks…

It has some outdated language even for 2013; frequent uses of ‘oriental’ as well as at least one use of ‘invalid’.

Recommended by a friend, I enjoyed The Screaming Staircase quite a lot. The setting of this alternate London is similar to our own, but coloured by the supernatural in a way familiar to fans of the Bartimaeus trilogy - which I read ages ago but remember fondly. Not only do the trio of Lockwood & Co. have to deal with the unquiet (and often grotesque and violent) dead, but also the political machinations of the British gentry and the attempts of rivals to close down their agency. The story progresses like a horror-filled Sherlock-esque mystery, and the ending is incredibly satisfying.
