Two men on the sex offenders register are dead, tortured to death and DC Maeve Kerrigan has to work with the irascible Derwent, she also has to deal with moving home and her relationship with DC Rob Langton all of which make for an interesting story.

The one where Maeve is partnered with DI Josh Derwent in investigating two killings - she finds Derwent abrasive and offensive, yet values what she learns from him at the same time, a push-pull relationship that continues in the future novels in this series. Great second novel in the series, very enjoyable.

2024 review.

I pretty much stand by my 2018 review. Although it's a twisty case, there are moments when your attention wanders & it seems to go on forever before the long awaited conclusion. I'm also remembering why Maeve Kerrigan's character irritated me in these first few books.

Knowing about the whole Kerwent thing in later books, I'm noticing a few things I missed in the first read through. There's more explainable reason as to why Derwent is acting as he is rather than him just being an ass - he's fighting major attraction to Maeve & is intent on keeping his promise to Godley to not fraternise.

 2018 review.

Maeve Kerrigan returns in a case that starts off with paedophiles being tortured and murdered and ends with an even more twisted tale of kidnapping and imprisonment of young women. Despite this, parts of the book dragged a little and at times the most interesting part was the on/off relationship between Kerrigan and Rob Langton. There were a couple of new characters, most notably DI Josh Derwent who obviously graduated from the Gene Hunt School of Charm and Policing. Overall I'd give this one 3.5 stars out of 5.
