I liked this book. I really did but it’s unusual for me to like a book as much as I liked this one and not love it. I don’t know what kept me from it  since I truly enjoyed reading it… Still Highsmith did a wonderful job at making you empathise and “root for” the villain and I thought her style was just fantastic.

Exactly like the show minus Caravaggio stuff. Well-written, not overly descriptive but just enough to set the scene, and the way his conflicting thoughts over his sexuality were written was well done. Enjoyed and would recommend for a quick read.

Nice writing and pacing.
Though Ripley feels rather young and inexperienced in this one.

Meh. Where was the DRAMA? Where was the INTRIGUE? For a story about a murderous sociopath I was quite bored.

I've had this on my TBR list since the movie came out in 1999, and now I've finally read it.  I doubt that I would have liked this book twenty-some years ago.  It's a character study of Tom Ripley rather than a plot-heavy mystery, which I prefer.  Having seen the movie, I was willing to give the book the time needed to appreciate the inner workings of Tom's mind.

I'm also looking forward to reading more Ripley books and some of her others.
