The majority of this book is tactical combat and long descriptions of battles and very little character development, relationships or even character interaction. I couldn't help but wonder if any of these characters do anything except work? For the majority of the book characters seem artificial since they don't to need rest, eat, or use the restroom- they just keep working and fighting.

It was fine enough but I vastly prefer the movie, and I don't think I would've enjoyed this book as much at all if I hadn't watched and loved the movie.

I like what they do with these Star Wars audiobooks. The music, the sound effects, the readers…all make for a fun experience.

The novelization worked better for me than the movie did. We got more of a look into the feelings and emotions than there was in the movie. Maybe that says something about the production skills of the people making the film, I'm not sure, but I know that the book worked better.

I picked up Alexander Freed's ROGUE ONE novelization in preparation for the release of ANDOR and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. Freed brings new depth to the characters in an already fantastic story. Jyn's characterization was spot on and the use of the cave as a metaphor for her struggle with her past was perfect. This is what a movie novelization should be. I look forward to exploring more of his work within the franchise.

THE STORY WITHIN THE REBELLION BEFORE "A NEW HOPE"
rating: ★★★★★

When Jyn Erso discovers the plans of the Death Star from her father, along with Cassian Andor, his humorous droid K-2SO, Bodhi Rook, Chirrut Imwe, and Baze Malbus, the group sets out on a journey to the stars in order to destroy the very thing the Galactic Empire wishes to keep hidden from the Senate and everyone in the galaxy.

I can't count how many times I've watched Rogue One on my TV screen, but to this day it remains one of my most favorite Star Wars films. It may just be a side story lining up its plot with the original Star Wars films, as well as adding a character from Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the originals itself. Darth Vader himself was iconic for showing up in the film and having well-written lines that grabbed the audience's attention and left them in awe.

The book however, is very similar to the film with its dialogue and scenes, but the author adds so much more to the characters than what we would see in the film. There is so much insight into what each character is thinking and feeling, and it really adds emotion to every scene. With a character like Bodhi, who is one of my favorite characters of the group apart from Cassian Andor, he didn't have that many lines in the film, but in the novel, readers get to hear his thoughts and understand what he is feeling when he goes through all the events in the story. With a film, we can only get so much, but when it's a book, any word or sentence provides so much background to who the character truly is.

As much as I loved the film, I loved the novel as well, as this is most likely the best screen-to-novel adaptation I have ever read so far. Props to the author for writing each character and scene so amazingly well that I could feel whatever each character was going through. If you are a Star Wars fan and you have also seen Rogue One, give this novel a try so you can discover more about these legendary characters. May the Force be with them, and everyone else.

Better than I expected for a novelization of a movie. It fleshed out the motivations for the central figures of the film. There were no hidden romances revealed - it respected the extremely short time frame of the story. I doubt much from the novel will really sink into my brain over the long term. But it was fun light reading.
