The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, by I.N.J. Culbard, H.P. Lovecraft

This was way too long and is a good example of how Lovecraft can waffle on if allowed the word count. This story features a goddam army of cats so I'm a bit annoyed I got so bored throughout the majority of the story. I contrast this to At the Mountains of Madness which had me hooked on every turn of the page. I'm not sure what the difference was but this story - despite the awesome army of cats - was only okay.

I rarely give 5-stars, but this work of fantasy-horror is fantastic. Like a dream, you don't want it to end. Lovecraft wisely choose to write it as one continuous, uninterrupted work. There are no chapters or parts. It makes the book even harder to put down. The end of Randolph Carter's quest was interesting and enlightening. The descriptions of the various cities and landscapes reminded me of the artwork of www.rogerdean.com. Also, you'll find out that Ghouls are not so bad, and you had better be nice to cats!

I can see why Lovecraft didn't publish this one and called it a practice run.

A good story but way too long with no chapter breaks. It was a tough read.

This book never really grabbed me unfortunately. I think it's one of his more uneven novellas. I would sooner recommend "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" or "At the Mountains of Madness" as stronger and more engaging works overall.

This was a collection of some of his less horrific, more fantastical stories. I really liked some of the shorter ones, and he definitely had some great ideas, but I'm not a fan of his style. It turned into a chore when I was reading anything longer than 10 pages. I'd like to read some of his short horror, but not for a while.

I got bored 60% of the story in. It's a vast, imaginative and at times quite beautiful narration but it's wildly imperfect, pointless and fails to generate any dread. For Lovecraft, that's surprising.
