This book is so early 2010s Tumblr. Frances and Alex are two sides of the same coin, both under immense academic pressure, one put on by themselves and the other put on by their parents. Frances, however, sometimes comes off as the girl who thinks she’s better than other girls because she’s different and not into stereotypical “girl things.” I find this to be true of a lot of female characters in Alice’s stories. It was also a little weird occasionally the narrator would switch from present tense to past tense.

This was a cute story about friendship, mental health, the dangers of the internet, and societal expectations around academia. I think this is a good book for anyone just graduating school and going into university. The message being it’s important to find the things in life that make you happy and pursing that instead of doing what society may expect of you. Also, that it’s super important to check in on your friends, especially if you suspect they may be struggling.
