Tweet-length review: Two sisters with an abusive father run away to a magical, murder mystery show. Boring confusion ensues.

It only took me a few hours to read "Caraval", but it's taken me 3 weeks to sit down and force myself to write this review. Why? Because I didn't love it. I wanted to. I really, really wanted to love this book. It seems like every bookstagrammer I follow is in love with this series by Stephanie Garber. Hell, that's why it was even on my TBR list. But ultimately, it didn't live up to the hype.

It's got flowery prose, poor character development, and no world building what so ever. I felt thrust into the middle of a series rather than the first of three books. I never quite grasped what was happening or more importantly WHY it was happening. It left me bored. Ultimately, “Caraval” doesn’t live up to it’s hype. Take this as a reminder to be careful not to buy into the bookish communities' hype.
