It was a bit too violent and vulgar for me. The flashback chapters were annoying and confusing. I don’t mind morally gray characters, but I couldn’t sympathize with any of the characters.

Incredibly fun, it doesn’t end. It’s sad. He’s seven, he’s 25, he almost dies like four times, he dies once. THERE ARE SPIDERS THE SIZE OF DOGS. THEY SWORDFIGHT SHARKS. AND WIN

It took me a bit to get back into this book at the start, but once I was in it was thrilling to read about Locke Lamora and his successes (and many failures). I do hope to read the next once even though it took me a bit to get back into this. I was stressed reading about Locke potentially getting caught at times!

Very fun worldbuilding and characters. I really enjoyed the setting (think a sort of fantasy Venice) and how fleshed out it felt. The characters all felt pretty three-dimensional with interesting motivations. I also enjoyed the way they and the world were expanded upon via the interludes at the end of each chapter, though I can see that slowing down the story in a bad way for other people.
Slightly more bloody than I thought going in, but not really a downside.

What a pleasant surprise this novel was. I'd be honored if anything I write could come close to it. Alas, I'll have to wait a day or so for its sequel to arrive in the mail, so I'll have to find another book to keep myself occupied with until then.

I picked up this book for its themes of brotherhood, found-family, and heist-adventure. It is all of these things in addition to an intricate plot and great character development. I really enjoyed the stories of little Locke and Chains. In some other stories, jumping back in time to visit your characters as children would seem superfluous. But no word, theme, side-story, flashback or piece of lore is wasted. It is all used to drive the story and characters to a satisfying conclusion!
