An achingly predictable plot and a flat-falling ending (no pun intended) the background of the concept of passing seemed to only have a passing relation to the plot of the story, though it gets brought up a lot. A lot of miserable people and unsympathetic actions, at least it's a short read.

this was such a whirlwind read. the pace, dialogue, and plot are gripping, leaving no time at all to feel bored. larsen captures so much within these pages: colorism, racism, misogyny, love, desire, motherhood. each of these aspects build to a shocking, yet inevitable, ending. the characters hold such nuance that it makes it difficult to fully support them and impossible not to love them. clare and irene’s relationship was perfectly fraught and complex, enchanting and all-encompassing. definitely a book i’d like to revisit again.
