i love sinking my teeth into a really chunky book and this one was a joy to read. i loved the concept and getting to know the character(s) through four different alternate storylines. it's like four coming-of-age books in one (spoiler: one of them is queer). it was also really interesting to learn so much about new york in the 60s, which is where the book is set, especially through such politically and culturally active characters just a couple years younger than me. the social/political situation felt very relatable - society was falling apart, people were divided into political extremes and young leftists were fighting the futile good fight against a system that (still) seems unbeatable.
i did find the ending a bit disappointing but at the same time it made sense. also, shout out to the james baldwin homage <3

If you, like me, were the kind of kid who laid mental wagers with yourself about the best outcomes when reading Choose Your Own Adventure books and started over until you got a good ending, the much larger amount of time you invest in the storylines here may occasionally result in you yelling "NOOOOOOOOO!"

I love a bildungsroman, so four versions of one is right up my alley. Of course this has elements common to all Auster (New York, Paris, baseball, poetry, translation, film, Columbia, etc.) but I expect to find those things and continue coming by his place to see how he’s rearranged the walls and floors rather than the furniture.

Far and away the most ambitious novel I’ve read; 4 3 2 1 is a superb epic about the four (alternative) lives of Archie Ferguson. This is a sweeping work that is so intricately placed within American history that it’s at once a story of a boy, and at the same time the story of a nation. Each of the four story-lines are as entrancing as the last, and I can’t help but marvel at Auster’s ability to subtly intertwine four lives while keeping them distinctly separate.

Ultimately, no short review can begin to scratch the surface of this grand novel. Do yourself a favour and give everything you have to this book.
