Really interesting idea, pretty boring execution.

This is a pretty competent procedural with a very interesting conceptual sci-fi twist.

I enjoyed both the concept and the characters.

It's wickedly witty, got likable characters, interesting politics, big ideas (without tedious info-dumps) & an interesting mystery that binds everything- what's not to like? The final bit wasn't probably as funny as the writer intended it to be- I'm talking about from when they solved the mystery to when they caught the culprit. But that's just me nitpicking.

So it's pretty much a run-of-the-mill thriller, in terms of plot, but Scalzi writes really engaging characters and has a style that's affable without being dumb. Also, the world he creates is really interesting, and, while I don't necessarily need to read more, I was kept interested by the weird minutiae.

Really fun read, quick read too. Definitely something relevant in todays technological world. Mystery was just complicated enough to keep me engaged without being confusing. Would love a TV/movie convert of this one day.
