This book is steady with its pace and the plot has been very skillfully and maturely executed, but my personal opinion is that The Sorrows of Young Werther is a much more powerful work than this (perhaps because the romantic sentiments of Werther happen to be exponentially more powerful that Eduard's and Ottilie's).
Nevertheless, this book is a very splendid realistic rendering of the country-side aristocracy. Though, not as gripping as The Sorrows of Young Werther, the way, Goethe has introduced a curious interplay of chance and fate, reason and passion and finally amalgamated them into an astonishing ending makes this book worth reading.

Goethe is a beautiful writer and a massive dickhead. It lost half a star for the eye-rolling ending, and, was there a single man in the book not in love with Ottilie?

Herr Goethe definitely had a passion for drama and tragedy. Except this time she dies but, don't cry yet, he joins her in death (gothic, right?) and "Thus the lovers lie sleeping side by side ; peace hovers above their resting-place ; fair angel faces gaze down upon them from aloft. And what happiness is in store for them at the moment of their common awakening!"
It started promising, a not-so-young couple's life is disturbed by 2 newcomers and using the chemical process of elective affinities, 2 new couples form; the marriage disintegrates and from this moment onward the pace slows down to the point of boredom just to be revived in the last 50 pages in full speed.

è un romanzo figlio del suo tempo: romantico e incentrato sulle emozioni, al limite del melodrammatico e dell'assurdo, traslando completamente il buon senso...Per questo non sono riuscita e entrare in sintonia con i personaggi, in particolar Eduard e Ottile, al punto da arrivare a odiarli perché sono completamente diversi da me e si lasciano trasportare dai sentimenti e dalle pulsioni del momento, senza badare alle consegueze. Ho provato tanta, tantissima pietà per Charlotte che è la vera eroina, cornuta e mazziata, dell'intera vicenda ma ha ancora un briciolo di razionalità e giudizio in mezzo a questo putiferio di emozioni che nel momento della sua massima espressione mi ha annoiata.
So perfettamente a cosa andassi incontro, ma non ero pronta al melodramma e ho mal sopportato quelle parti. Anche lo stile è figlio del suo tempo: si perde in descrizioni minuziose di paesaggi e personaggi all'interno dello stesso creandone dei quadri semoventi, descive ogni più minuziosa emozione, pensiero e opinione, insistendo sulle caratteristicheche ritiene buone e giuste o su particolari immagini, squisitamente romantiche. Ma l'odio per i personaggi ha soverchiato ogni cosa e lo stile non è ciò che mi è dispiaciuto meno.
è un romanzo che mi ha fatta arrabiare e innervosire per l'assoluta insensatezza delle azioni compiute dai personaggi e so perfettamente che sono coerenti con il periodo storico in cui la storia è stata scritta, ma nonostante questo non sono riuscita ad apprezzare l'opera.
La trama, di per sè, è interessante, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le dinamiche che si instaurano tra i personaggi, e come questi scriteriati cerchino di arrivare ai propri scopi senza badare agli altri...Credo che il fastidio per le scelte dei personaggi copra tutto il resto e non riesca ad andare oltre.
Non è un romanzo che fa per me: non ho abbastanza freddezza e distacco da leggerlo e apprezzarlo al di fuori del mio contesto e dei miei pensieri, inserendolo nel suo periodo storico e giudicandolo in base a quello. Offre, però, molti spunti per frasi a effetto da inserire come citazioni.

Much easier to read than most of Goethe's writing. Charlotte is deeply sympathetic to me, such an even-tempered person. Eduard is less so. What a drama queen. Also, why are only Charlotte, Ottilie and Eduard (and I guess Nanni?) called by their names while everyone else gets a job title? lends a very allegorical tone. I guess a tract on the relevance of divorce?
