The book was good but the storyline and some of the fantasy plot points were quite confusing. I also feel like the book could have been cut shorter and that the main relationship could have been better developed (some stuff didn’t make sense and too much back and forth). Nonetheless, I still enjoyed reading it and it made me feel things which is something I love in a book (I cried like 3 times).

If you like You've Got Mail and Pride and Prejudice, then you'd enjoy this. The premise itself was refreshing and immersive. You'd think all the talk about dead bodies would make the story less romantic, but it doesn't lol I enjoyed the character development- especially Mercy. I'll admit that this spoke to my grumpy male protagonist bias, and I wish it veered more from You've Got Mail than it did (at least, in the first half). But as a whole, this book was heartfelt, amusing, and incredibly romantic to me.

“Hello, Hart-ache,”
“Hello, Merciless.”

Hart and Mercy are so cute to me. I love friends first and pen pals. Both tropes I personally really enjoy. It dragged for me after the
third act breakup (oh no I am so shocked)
but I felt  happy and resolved by the end. I loved the build up and relationship building. They had good banter but I wouldn't say it's enemies to lovers, more like miscommunication meets irritation. The fantasy elements were interesting but I kept hoping there would be a bit more explanation of the creatures and lands. It was a unique concept though and a very fun and beautiful story. Hart is basically a ranger/cowboy/guard (marshal) combination and Mercy is an undertaker (she preps dead bodies). She's sweet and a plus-size FMC! He adores her and they bond over books and life. It's real real love..... IMO. Her family really pissed me off though. They were so judgmental of her and expected her to deal with their problems 24/7. Overall I believe Hart is wicked hot and overall really enjoyed the unique and sweet fantasy story.

“I want to be with someone who asks me how my day was, someone who finds what I have to say interesting. I want to be with someone who thinks that - I don't know - that I'm kind of special. That's all.”

I laughed and I ugly cried. I did not expect a fantasy romance set in a world with undead to be so emotional, funny, and have an incredible love story.

The undertaking of Hart and Mercy- 3.5⭐️ 3🌶️

Fantasy Romance
Dual POV
Undertaker
Mythical Beasts
Letters
Rivals to lovers
Demi-gods
Sherif/cowboy vibes
Grumpy/sunshine
Curvy FMC
30’s MC’s
🏳️‍🌈 Side Characters

Tw: death, dead bodies, grief

The plot was a fantasy version of You’ve Got Mail… only with undead, undertakers, sheriffs and funeral homes? But the romance was good. The nicknames were top notch.

Thank goodness the pets didn’t die!

from the beginning, the story took place in a different world. Instead of introducing the world in little snippets, there was one giant info dump that took up more than half a chapter, around 32% that explained a lot of the history of the world. I really disliked that. But a lot of the world was unique, but because it went so long to give any world building hints, often I was overly confused by what was described with absolutely zero explanation.

The side characters were all delightful! The FMC was level headed, loyal and it was really nice to see her passion and love for the work she was doing. The MMC was pretty bland, but I like how his feelings developed.

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy was so much more than I expected it to be! This book made me squeal from pure joy, and it also broke my heart. I cannot recommend it enough!

Megan Bannen took You’ve Got Mail, fantasy, and westerns, and combined those elements into something truly magical. I don’t know if I have to words to describe exactly how this book made me feel.

Read The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy if you love
🩵 stories with epistolary elements
🩵 enemies to lovers
🩵 he falls first
🩵 grumpy/sunshine
🩵 romantic fantasy

I can’t wait to read more from Megan Bannen. 4.5 stars!
