Will tear you open and make you sob. But you won’t be able to put it down. So so so good.

I loved the first two thirds of this book! The world building is really engaging and thought through, and the beginning of the actual grace year is incredibly written and super gripping. I found the ending to be a bit rushed, and not as thoughtful as the rest of the book. I felt that the
love triangle with Ryker and Michael
really unnecessary and cliche, and I found the entire
pregnancy storyline
honestly quite hard to get through. It's such a shame because it could have been so so good but the ending was just disappointing

there’s a lot i liked and an ok amount i didn’t. the beginning is rough, parts of the middle feel shallow, and the ending rings a bit hollow, but the breathless pace and tense scenes work well and a lot of the individual moments made me shiver. i’m left wanting more both positively and negatively.

Dark, heavy, dystopian, but so thought provoking. This definitely isn’t the book for everyone and I would be slow to recommend it as an actual YA book but if you could handle the graphic nature of the Hunger Games then you could handle this one. Definitely a story that will stick with me for a while and the author’s interview in the audiobook and discussion questions in the physical book really made me stop and reflect on this book more than I would have. Really reflecting on this took it from a 3 to 4🌟 book.

I will say I don’t feel like this is the best written book and I feel like it could have benefited from some more editing and refinement and it could have been a 5🌟 dystopian read. But definitely a fascinating story that is going to stick with me for a while.

Themes reminiscent of Handmaiden’s Tale and Hunger Games but also a completely new story in my opinion.

This book sound unique and like it might actually do something but instead it’s full of unlikeable characters, internalized misogyny, and toxic YA tropes that further romanticize the concept of young girls falling in love with the “bad boy”. Except this time the bad boy literally captures and skins young girls alive, but like it’s ok because Tierney is not your regular girl, she’s SMART. This book does not deserve 4 stars, it’s bad. If you’re looking for a feminist YA apocalyptic dystopian novel about female power, pass on this one and read Extasia by Claire Legrand instead.

This honestly turned out to be a pleasant surprise - I'd added it to my TBR a while ago but by the time I came back to it, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. The premise was interesting and well-done - while it wasn't totally unique, it was a combination of enough tropes/premises that it kept me guessing. I really enjoyed the characters, but the romance plotline towards the middle just felt out of place. I think that was part of my only real gripe with the book - the pacing felt off and occasionally things just didn't feel like they belonged in the book. However, the ending was really strong and made up for some of the weird pacing in the middle.
