A really gripping read, read it in a day. I love Friedas writing style. It's so easy to read and get lost into her story. I was obsessed with this one, it was so good, I was tense all the way through it and was trying to figure out what was going on, I liked the ending and was glad they got what they deserved!

Synopsis:
Amy, a medical student, spends her first overnight shift on a locked psychiatric ward & weird things happen.
My Thoughts:
Let me start by saying this is just my opinion! I went into this open minded & excited because many of my booksta friends rated this so highly! But as a healthcare professional, I just couldn’t take this book seriously. The premise & setting of this was so intriguing but it was poorly executed.
The only positive for me: The audiobook narration by Leslie Howard was great! It was well-paced & easy to listen to. I really liked her style & would definitely listen to more read by her.
Now for the not so great:
- Don't get me wrong, I love a good popcorn thriller & can suspend disbelief..to a point. But this whole plot was absurdly unrealistic.
- The MC was dumb. She was painfully cringy.
- I guessed almost all the plot twists.
- The medical references/terminology were unbelievably inaccurate. Anyone who has watched one episode of grey’s anatomy could’ve done better.
- It played into the stigmatizing trope that mental illness equals dangerous, which is insensitive to say the least & after reading that McFadden is a practicing physician who specializes in brain injuries, it honestly shocked & disappointed me that she would perpetuate that sort of ignorance.
I enjoyed The Housemaid so much that I want to keep reading more from McFadden, but so far none have lived up to that for me. I will say this was a very quick, easy read. It could work if you’re looking for a light, cheesy palette-cleanser type book.
Side note: if you are a fan of peach iced tea, strawberry jam, dental floss or spider man, I’d steer clear of this one 😂
