While this book is certainly gloomy and dark, I found it strangely intriguing. The characters are extremely flawed, their lives even more so.

I don't know how to describe this one...
It's weird but good.
Would recommend.

Wuthering Heights is like a Mulholland Drive parched-angry wank, accompanied by neighbourhood gossip from an ageing dementia suffering girl from the Dream Phone game overheard on a party line. The book is more frenzied than the characters contained within.
The true hero of the novel is Nelly Dean. A woman who sasses those in her charge whilst totally failing to control them. How this woman kept her job for all those years is a lesson in covering one’s arse.

I read this book in about 1990. The intense drama was more appealing to me then than it was this time through. I never did like the dark tone. While I found certain parts captivating, I often had violent feelings myself, wanting to slap the characters for their self centered behavior.

I thought this was a little slow at first partly because I already knew what was going to happen. Also Heathcliff and Cathy just made me want to strangle somebody. They got me so pissed off at sometimes I wanted to throw the book, the most stupid people I ever read about. Without Heathcliff you wouldn't have a story right?
The ending bittersweet made me smile.
