supposed to be an insightful look into women's struggles, particularly in the fashion industry, and the problems that come with working in it, such as drug addiction, sex as a self destructive coping mechanism, and eating disorders. i expected it to be sad and interesting, but it missed out on the interesting part.
the writing style was absolutely horrific because the author was doing too much of everything. the sentences were overly complicated, as if the author was trying to reach the word count requirement for an essay. therefore, the descriptions weren't good, they just bored me further.
it doesn't get better when we look at the characters, it actually gets morally questionable. there was one woman of color, and the author decided to portray her in a not that vaguely racist way. she made her a drug dealer with a stereotypical accent. she also used the only fat woman in the story to demonize being fat. we don't get to actually meet the woman as a person, we just learn about how insecure she is about being fat.
when i read the summary i figured that this would be a story actually showcasing the difficulties of the immigrant experiences, specifically negative experiences you only have if you're a person of color. and yet the author made the person of color in her book a drug dealer, and picked a white woman from europe to represent the immigrant experience. the plot wasn't good either! the book is incredibly disorganized plot wise and it doesn't get better the longer you read.
