Some books are so iconic that they are difficult to review particularly as many people spend years studying the writing. Eugene onegin is such a story and is loved in Russia both by tasarists and communists alike.
Written as a poem it tells of a young man who inherits his uncle's estate after a period of misspent youth. He befriends Lensky who is in love with Olga, on visiting her family Olga's sister tatyana falls in love with onegin and writes him a letter. A famous duel occurs before onegin having rejected tatyana comes across her again.
The story of pushkins own life is equally as dramatic and my reading of the book was enhanced by the following podcast https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08tvjjq
