His argument is built on a not uninteresting reframing of religion as a set of practices surrounding meaning, rather than as necessarily a set of beliefs. However—setting aside that this is at best an intellectualized abstraction of how religion exists and is enacted in society—he then uses this framework to call any and every idea ever associated with religion a fundamentally, inextricably, and irreversibly religious one, and hence any atheist philosophy which has borrowed it in part or in whole essentially hypocritical. And for one who condemns polemical cherry-picking and speculative unfounded criticism, he is remarkably prone to it himself.

This might be a new favourite. It is definitely the book I would most eagerly recommend to people I know. John Gray eviscerates a slew of thinkers old and new in his summation of the totality of atheism. No, atheism is not constrained to merely thinking there is no God, and Gray delves into the depths of the more thoughtful versions of this creed. If you want to understand modernity this is a very good book for a grounding.
