Actually, this is one of the better business books I’ve read (I’m pretty skeptical of them in general), and I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. I agree with some of the other reviews that say a lot of this is common sense but it can’t hurt to hear things more than once and in many different ways.
I listened to this book on audio from the library, but think it would be helpful to but to go back and reference and to use the charts more.
I’m a new manager, but even though it said that it’s for everyone, it reads as for people muchhhhh more senior who can exert more control over the organization as a whole.
There were a few times I laughed out loud, particularly at the “learning curve flat as Kansas” mention.
Reasons I didn’t give it the 4:
- in 2024, it’s atrocious advice (and regardless of year, I think) to ask people at work about their politics as a way to test their critical thinking. Talk about potentially starting out on the wrong foot. I don’t want to know my boss’s politics and I don’t want them to know mine 😬
- the book was so jargon-y. When the phrase “accelerated synergy plan” was used, I rolled my eyes so hard I saw my brain.

I received this book for free from my work when I was promoted to manager position. Some interesting advice but this book really isn’t targeted at first time managers... the target audience seems to be someone who’s at the level of department lead (at least a second-line manager) and either moving to a different group within their current company, or moving between companies. Lots of focus on politics and social dynamics at that level. Not especially useful for me... maybe will come back to it at a different point in my career.

It's a quick good prep when you are starting a new job as a manager. Help you to think through the model/situation what you are hired for (sometimes you need to figure out yourself).

Extremely helpful for anyone mid to senior level making a transition to a new job, particularly if you are leading and/or managing a team.

Hands down one of the worst books I have read in my time on this planet
