I read this when it was first released and ate it up. Almost seven years later, the exact same thing is happening. Maas is amazing with her foreshadowing, even in the very first pages. Even with a massive amount of characters, she gives each of them a unique personality and backstory. She really knows how to draw readers into a story.
I remember finishing the story feeling like it could be a standalone, but devoured the next books just the same. I am looking forward to finding the little details I missed on first read throughout the series.

The paintings Feyre made on the dresser drawers even forecast her and her sister’s future mates😉
I felt genuine terror while she endured the trials, especially with the worm. Maas also sets us up for Feysand so wonderfully in this book and learning later on how much Rhys did to protect Feyre Under the Mountain makes me melt a little

The main character is impossibly bland and frustrating. She is put through countless toxic or downright abusive situations. Both potential love interests are toxic and abusive. Her family is neglectful and abusive. This classifies, at best, as a dark romance. If you are already unimpressed by the offerings of that genre you will not have a good time reading this. The first sixty percent of the book is boring and toxic. After that it is no longer as boring but triple toxic.
The audiobook narrator does good with the material she is given but this is definitely not a tale for me. People say the next book is better and this is the worst book in the series but I am not giving this author a second chance.

I had been avoiding this book because all the hype it was getting. I was like, Twilight got this much attention and wasn't great, so i was being stubborn.

I was wrong. This book was a retelling of the myth of Tamlin, with a bit of Beauty and the Beast for flavor. It is amazingly well written, compelling, and entertaining. If you liked Holly Black's Far books, you will like this one. I started this book at midnight last night, fell asleep while reading it, and jumped right back in on waking.

Feyre is a strong female lead, who is disinclined to taking anyone's crap due to being the only thing seemingly keeping her family from starving in the years before the story starts. She is dealing with realistic dangers for her environment, and the care she has for her family shines through. Tamlin is a pretty male lead, but I did find the other male characters a bit more interesting. Tamlin is dealing with his own problems mostly, and the need for secrecy does drag on the plot a bit. The only real downside I saw, was the leads falling in love felt rushed. She did a lot of character and world building in the beginning, stuffed them falling in love in the middle, and that made the driving force behind Feyre's decisions seem a bit hollow. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series though.

I thought this book was pretty mid. SJM is good at creating a fantastical world, but I find the romantic relationships in her books to be somewhat problematic. ACOTAR was no exception. While I liked the overall plot of the book, I could not get on board with the possessive and over-protective nature of the male love interests. I know there is a lot of hype around the series, so I’m willing to continue on to the next book in hopes that there is some character growth!
