This book knows what it's doing. It isn't trying to make you wonder who committed the crime, although there is an air of mystery for sure. It's more of an homage to holler life, to growing up poor and living and dying in the same no-good town, to women who are hard on the outside and find hardness within when they need it. Engel's writing is evocative and conjures vivid images of the characters, their hometown, and their plights.
