How this didn't win the Booker and blast the vexing The Luminaries (a joyless "artistic" exercise)out of contention is beyond me.
It's been 3 years since I read the book and the story comes so easily to me. Pick this one up for a story that is rich in the politics of the time as well as the lives of the individuals who are swept by its tide along with their private hopes and miseries.

A meditative study of family, time, and place. The raw symbolism of The Lowland rips into your flesh and tears at your heart. Each character, though flawed, explores an element of pain which can not be ignored.

Лахири е успяла да пресъздаде цялата обстановка много красиво и в същото време въздействащо. Героите са със силни характери, всеки борещ се за някакъв свой идеал.
