A BAD HAIR DAY COOKBOOK
By Nancy J. Cohen

Marla Vail, the savvy hairdresser and sleuth of the Bad Hair Day Mystery series by Nancy J. Cohen, is back. Instead of solving a new mystery, however, Marla is sharing lots of easy to prepare recipes in a cookbook.

A BAD HAIR DAY COOKBOOK is a great little book. There are a lot of recipes, over 160, well organized into types, for example appetizers, beverages, and desserts. I especially like how the entrees are divided into types as well, lamb, chicken, vegetarian and more! The recipes themselves are quite simple, for the most part. A good number also involve time saving measuring such as pre-packaged food and the use of a microwave.

Each section of the book includes a nice graphic, the story line of one of the Bad Hair Day Mysteries, the names of recipes included in that book, or food talked about if the book didn't include recipes, and an excerpt. In addition each recipe has a little introduction by Marla, sometimes including tips. Suggestions for themed and holiday dinners are also included as well as a special article written by author Nancy Cohen's mother entitled A Sabbath Dinner.

I was pleased to see a great variety of foods and flavors included and I was absolutely thrilled to see several recipes featuring lychees! I adore lychees, but aside from one recipe by Ming Tsai, I have never cooked with them. Lychee Blueberry Muffins and Lychee Curry Chicken will hopefully find their way to my plate soon!

A BAD HAIR DAY COOKBOOK is an easy to read cookbook chock full of recipes and anecdotes from the Bad Hair Day Mystery series. This book is enjoyable to read even if you're unfamiliar with the mysteries and even if you don't cook!

FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me an e-copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

I am a cookbook-aholic and always love when authors that include recipes in their books compile them all into one easy location - like a cookbook!  I have been savoring each recipe and while I haven't made any of them quite yet, I have bookmarked a few to try out on my family and friends.

What I also enjoyed about this book was the excerpts from several of the books, noting which recipes were from which book, and the tips and tricks at the beginning.  The recipes include everything from appetizers to desserts and everything in between.

I don’t usually review cookbooks … but I do review cozy mysteries, and A Bad Hair Day Cookbook is the best of both worlds. It’s a cookbook within a cozy mystery universe, a concept which I find delightful in every way.

Right away, Cohen introduces us to Marla Vail, the protagonist in her Bad Hair Day mystery series, and then ‘Marla’ takes over and the rest of the cookbook is mostly from her point of view. This technique serves to engage fans of the series, as well as people who haven’t read any of the books yet, and it enhances the book snippets that occur at the end of each recipe category. I also especially loved reading the article on a Sabbath Dinner, written by Cohen’s mother, included at the end of the book.

All the recipes look delicious! I’m most anxious to try the Citrus Cider (seems very cozy and perfect for the holidays, Chicken Spaghetti (her version seems less involved than others I’ve tried), Zucchini Quiche (love light meal ideas!), and the Strawberry Cobbler (because… how is that a bad idea?).

Bottom Line: A Bad Hair Day Cookbook is a great way to find yummy new recipes and a cozy mystery series to try (or keep following) all at the same time. More than ‘just’ a cookbook, this is a fun collection of recipes with a cozy mystery twist sure to tantalize your taste buds and your avid reader radar as well. Cohen also adds a personal touch throughout, from her protagonist as well as the author’s own heritage, and readers will appreciate these meaningful peeks into both lives.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Great Escapes Book Tours. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.A Bad Hair Day Cookbook by Nancy J. Cohen is a different approach toa cookbook, but one that I enjoyed.

Find the recipe and which mystery it came from

I haven't read any of the Bad Hair Day Mysteries, but now I want to learn more about Marla Vail and her detective husband. Marla sounds like a fabulous character. I am adding these to my TBR pile.

The thing about this cookbook is each group of recipes; there is an excerpt from one of the Bad Hair Day Mysteries. There are so many great recipes, and I can't wait to try some of them, like Brisket with dried plums or the mushroom barley soup. Yum!

So, check it out. We all need cookbooks, and this one comes with excerpts from mysteries. How many cookbooks can say that? I am giving A Bad Hair Day Cookbook by Nancy J. Cohen, five stars. Maybe, I will post a few of the recipes on social media later.

Food, recipes, and a mystery series – a yuumy treat!

A fun way to experience recipes and food – through the eyes of a master storyteller in her favorite character’s voice. The guacamole, portobello mushroom appetizers, and shrimp brown rice are some of my fav dishes. I love Nancy’s Bad Hair Day series, and I eagerly look forward to her next release.

I am excited to get my hands on a copy of this cookbook. There is a variety of easy to make recipes, including beef, chicken, fish, and vegetarian entrees. Followed by a fun book excerpt that lists the recipes featured in Nancy J. Cohen's Cozy Mystery Series. I will definitely be starting with the dessert recipes. The Cranberry Bread sounds yummy! I am looking forward to trying all these great recipes.

The Bad Hair Day Cookbook by Nancy J. Cohen is a 2019 Orange Grove Press publication.

This is a fantastic idea for cozy mystery fans

Cozy mystery readers often find a handful of recipes at the end of a book, a nice added bonus, whether it’s a culinary themed mystery, or not.

Occasionally, I do remember to jot down a recipe I find in a book, but often times I’ll shove the book back on my shelf after I’ve finished reading it, thinking that if I need the recipe again, I can always look it back up.

But I also read books from subscription services and from the library, and I usually forget to copy the recipe down before I return it. It then becomes impossible for me to remember which recipe was in what book.

I would imagine many readers have that same problem, so having the author thoughtfully compile all the recipes featured in their cozy mystery series in one place is genius!

The author reminds readers of the book certain recipes were featured in, and provides a brief overview of that book, so fans of the series can recall their favorite stories, too.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series, this book will make you want to get to know Marla Shore Vail and acquaint yourselves with this series while enjoying 'Marla's' wonderful, down to earth and comforting recipes.

This is a no- frills cookbook, and my pre-release, ARC copy did not come with pictures. However, these recipes are very easy to follow, with common ingredients one can usually find at their local supermarket- under normal circumstances, that is. Mainly, this is a book for fans of the series, and is a great marketing tool, I’d like to see catch on with other cozy authors.

The recipes are organized into sections, like most cookbooks, beginning with appetizers and ending with desserts and includes ‘Themed Menus’ as well. It should be noted that there are no pork recipes out of respect for Marla’s Kosher kitchen upbringing.

Overall, This book will be a huge help for cozy mystery fans who will find it so very helpful to have all the recipes featured in the ‘Bad Hair Day’ series all together in one book, as well as an easy reference to the books in the series, with a buy link included for convenience.

I admit I’ve only read one book in this series, but after reading through this recipe book and getting to know a little more about Marla, I’m looking forward to reading through this series, starting at the beginning and working my way up.
