I liked the premise of the book, however, I was expecting it’s characterization of the witches to be different. I was disappointed that it didn’t subvert the traditional role of the witch as a villain. I do think it did what it was trying to do, but nothing more than that. The story itself was intriguing and tense, making it difficult to put down. I also really appreciated the dark gothic vibes  which made it a perfect fall read!

If you have any triggers surround the mistreatment/death of animals, DO NOT read this. The first paragraph has the graphic details of animal death and it is all throughout the book. After the first 2 or 3 instances of animal death, I skipped multiple chunks of text any time an animal was mentioned. Which was incredibly frequently. If I had known just how often this content is discussed, and in such graphic detail, I would’ve passed on reading it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good book! But in my opinion it’s not worth it

I wish the ending was stronger. I understand that setting up for a sequel is important but so is ending a book properly.

This book was so dark and raw, and I loved it all… until it tripped at the finish line and kind of turned into an after school special.

Solid book. I agree with some of the other reviews that I prefer my horror to not have romantic subplots, so if you are similar you might not enjoy this book. Otherwise, there was wonderful world building, interesting characters, and a fairly unique plot when it comes to witch hunts. I will say that some of the themes were heavy handed, but overall I recommend the audiobook for a dark night's entertainment

This book was a big surprise for me. Reads so much better than the cover, which screamed a kind of run of the mill YA to me. 

It is well thought out and the descriptions are visceral. Will definitely pick up the author again despite the fact the ending didn't quite hit for me
