It was my first Lawrence book, and it has held me in fascination since the first page. It was quite fast paced, if it weren't for the lengthy narration. But it was interesting to read about, with easy-to-read language.

Over 500 pages with complex yet unlikeable characters, I couldn't stop myself from reading. The feeling I got reading it resembles the feeling I get when watching reality TV shows. They were terrible people, but I needed to read more, to know more. It was an addictive page-turner.

Much like my favourite show Gilmore Girls and my favourite classic book Wuthering Heights, the story consists of overly dramatic, hysterical characters with beautiful physical looks and rotten inner cores, long dialogues, and is set in a lovely location for all of them to take over the stage.

Despite being written over a hundred years ago, I was surprised to see the elements of gay characters. It was a fresh sight to behold, and it was no wonder the book was shrouded in scandal back when it was first published. Witnessing their storyline with the "will they, won't they" trope was also a tantalising experience.

Overall I had fun reading this book. It was passionate, erotic, poetic, dramatic. Despite the large gap between the dates I started and finished the book, it only took me about two weeks to finish it, as I inhaled the chapters whenever I was in the mood. If his other books are as good as this, I happily look forward to reading his other works.
