i'm a sucker for the 90s. i'm a sucker for all things forbidden and starcrossed. i could probably read various iterations on the brooding and broken person versus the innocent and hopeful person for the rest of my life and be happy. i went into reading this thinking it would be chicklit fluff and it's an easy read, but the writing is effective and conjures up great imagery. plus the author does a great job of capturing different perspectives, which a lot of writers struggle with. something that stood out to me was how she writes the brief moments of trauma and recovered memories on manning's part; they feel real and raw and believable in the way they jolt him in and out of reality, especially considering that he's never at a point where he's trying to work through those things so much as trying to cope totally around them.

there were awkward moments in the prose for sure, along with some mistakes not caught in the proofreading stage, but! i still consider this an easy 4/5 for the genre.
