I had to bowdlerize this a lot with the read aloud - well I guess I didn't have to, but I didn't want my 5 year old talking about "hobos" at preschool.

I was obsessed with the second book growing up but had never read any of the others until I was an adult. This is my first time rereading them all. I enjoyed this first one. I love how nonsensical it is. It is a bit dated, for instance, how one kid's nickname is fatso but the stories are a lot of fun. I never had the context of this one when reading the second book as a kid, but it definitely gives background for the next book.
