I always hated that whiny princess in Hans Christian Andersen's The Princess and the Pea. What kind of guest complains about her bed when she's been rescued from a terrible storm?

This version is a breath of fresh air. DeGennaro's breezy sketches are charmingly done, and I love the font--each character's name is in a different type. Wilson's Prince Henrik is looking for a tough, uncomplaining kind of girl, and he finds her in a satisfyingly fractured-tale way. Two thumbs up.

Very cute version of the old story. Pippa is awesome! My kids loved it!

I love that there is a branch of princess lit that is all about "real girls" rather than princesses being the ultimate goal and the epitome of perfection. This was a great one. I love that it teaches to always look for the positive in any situation...make lemonade as it were. I will read this to my girls again and again.

Henrik doesn't want to marry a princess. He's seen how "sensitive" his brother's wife (the princess tested by the pea) can be and he wants the opposite. He wants a princess who likes hockey and camping and has a nice smile. So he devises a test to find her.

Missed this Princess and the Pea spin-off when it was first published, but I'm glad I discovered it now! Very fun. Prince seeks non-princessy princess. Frozen peas are involved.

This is a funny book that works well for alternate versions of fairy tales. Prince Henrik isn’t very impressed with princesses—they’re just too sensitive, so he decides he wants one who likes camping and hockey. His test for sleeping is a camping mattress and a pack of frozen peas. The illustrations are whimsical.

It feels very anti-diversity of interests for girls. As though you cannot be a "REAL princess" and also be good at sports and activities. It was, in my humble opinion, VERY sexist. It did have some redeeming humor (frozen peas as icepack), but overall, not great.
