Required reading for all. However its incomplete. I learned so much about the other people involved in the revolution but I was surprised that it ended the story in 1965. The struggle continues, and I also would have liked more on the Spanish occupation history as well, who I really don't care that they were there for 400 years, they too invaded and occupied. But oh so necessary for everyone to finally get a picture of the colony's status today.
I didn't know that the only time that the US bombed its own citizens was in Puerto Rico. I didn't know the PR flag's possession was illegal on the island. The poems my mom can still recite I didn't know were part of a targeted effort by the US to force English on to future generations through the public school system. I didn't know Munoz Marin was a opium addict who had all the privileges in life but didn't use any of them.
I didn't know is my response so the book's aim has been accomplished.

"Puerto Rican eyes are all dark, with lots of yesterdays in them."

CW: racism, slurs, detailed violence, gore and body horror, genocide, sterilization, terrorism, narcotics, medical malfeasance, torture, etc.

A really hard read but a necessary one to fill in critical untold history. My only complaint is one of privilege: I felt the account was related a little too sensationally - the content is horrifying enough and I can process it on my own without being bludgeoned (and I feel it harms the reporting as well). Likewise, the audiobook tone was a bit much. The contents are detailed and horrific enough; I would have really appreciated a more neutral audio delivery.

It’s so important to learn your own history. This book should be a mandatory read for all Puerto Ricans.

Glad for the information, but wish I'd picked a historian who's a little better of a writer. Though it is very cool how much interviewing he did to put this story together.
