Love love loved this book

Really enjoyed reading this first book of a new series. I hope we get to see Maeve’s Aunt in the coming books.

I recently stumbled upon a big stash of books that look and sound exactly like this one: witch (or other supernatural creature) doesn't know about or can't access her talents; possibly she goes to some kind of magical boarding school; there are three or four Hot Boys™ of various shapes and sizes ready to compete for her affection; the covers are all blue-purple-pink; I'm probably going to read a whole host of them and be completely unable to tell them apart even as I'm reading. Oh dear.

Some minor points:
-It is in fact possible to both reference Harry Potter every five minutes and overtly rip it off. They're not mutually exclusive.

-We're deep into the book before Maeve realises that there's something...unusual...about the school and that supernatural stuff (so eloquent, I know) is real. I get it: Maeve's ignorance allows the book to explain the world to Maeve, rather than to the reader, and thus avoid talking down to the reader too much. It does slow things down somewhat, though, and leaves Maeve looking like not the brightest little duckling ever.

-Already I have trouble telling the various Hot Boys™ apart. Helpfully, they all have different backgrounds: shifter, vampire, maybe other vampire, witch. Less helpfully, the chapters regularly shift between POVs, and then I really can't tell them apart.

-But...really...are half these books secretly published by the same people? Or at least all using the same cover designer?

Maeve is really neat though she has a problem with stubbornness. when Maeve gets expelled for breaking a bullies nose, she gets sent to the boarding school Nightworld Academy where things arnt as they seem. While there she meets a lot of new unique friends in Amelia her roommate, Jamie the hot nerd I love him, Ash the very talented and Charming Rugby player, and Andrei the naughty hot bad boy. even the mean girl Katherine is likeable. And Tobias the teacher is intriguing. Term One is mostly Maeve adapting to being who she is and learning about her new world. These characters are awesome and I cant wait for Term 2

It was okay

I was able to finish it. But I do recommend if your on the younger end. The drama and thrilling parts were a little lackluster for me. I kept hoping something crazier would happen, it just felt very mild. And the main character acts a little young for her age. For me, it's just too young

Maeve finds herself expelled from school after making a drastic move to save a boy's life. She'd seen his death in a vision. Her aunt volunteers to pay for her to go to a private academy that will help her with her "condition". It doesn't take long for Maeve to realize this isn't a normal school and her visions aren't hallucinations.

I really enjoyed the story. It was invigorating. It was like House of Night and Vampire Academy. There's even a character that reminds me of Adrian from Vampire Academy. There's a girl in here that makes Aphrodite look like a docile cat. It's insane! I did have a few problems with this book though. Mainly the fact that I felt some scenes were rushed over when they should have been enhanced more. I also felt that focuses were placed where they shouldn't be.

The characters. I really feel like Amelia should have played a bigger part in the book than she did. I'm also torn between admiring Maeve and getting really annoyed by her narrow-minded opinions. She is great, but she really needs to keep her opinions to herself and stop justifying her opinions without even listening to the other people.

The narrators weren't really horrible, but they could have done a better job. I've listened to work from Sarah Colton before. I'm not sure I've listened to anything by Steve Campbell before. Either way, I like to keep an e-book companion with me. I may not follow super close, but I do follow. They changed the wording a bit in multiple places. I wouldn't really mind that because it doesn't change the story at all. However, they actually left off about a page of a chapter. I couldn't overlook that.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story. I do hope that Maeve has a personality change as the series continues. I don't see her keeping friends if she keeps looking down on everybody for what they do in life. I really adore character transformations. They add value to a book series. I can't wait to continue this series.

Say it with me: Self. Pub. Doesn’t. Equal. Self. Edited.

Indie authors can use editors! Not just can- should! I know going into books on kindle unlimited that the plots are going to be small scale and full of holes, but I can deal with that if punctuation is used correctly!! This author was just throwing things in. Instead of full stops, she used question marks? Loads of little things like that. But added together I wanted to scream the entire way through.

Now the actual plot was kinda cool. Meet and fall for guy you have seen die. Except I couldn’t get over the fact how long it took for her to say something about it! Or why one of the people who looked into her brain (A TEACHER) didn’t seem to mind one of the students was gonna be murdered!!!

Other than that obvious character flaw of seeming to want this dude to die- the MC was alright. A master of the snark for sure. And the other characters were okay too. Except Ash. He was full of himself. And I say this while having the comparison of a cocky vampire right next to him.

Not upset I read this, but won’t be continuing the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! I won't lie, I was a bit torn about how felt about Meave, sometimes, she was a bit much. The cliffhanger left me wanting more. The narration was fantastic. I am familiar with Sarah Colton's work, but not Steve Campbell. He is definitely on my radar!

**This review is being written after making it to Book 4 in the series**

First off, several grammatical errors. Switches between tenses. The FMC is annoying as -hell-. Immature to the max, selfish, stupid (although she supposedly has above average intelligence). I stuck with the series to see if maybe it was a case that she'd grow up as the series progresses and she doesn't. At all. This series had potential but there are just so many inconsistencies within the plot it's ridiculous.

**Spoiler**
The inconsistency that made me quit the series:

At the end of book 3, the shifters of the academy are walking to someplace remote, it is confirmed they are walking, it is stated more than once that they are walking miles and miles to a remote location. Open up book 4 and suddenly it's not all of the shifters but just a few and they are driving.

This author couldn't even keep benign things like that straight between books, so just imagine how bad it is within each book.

This series wasn't organized well at all and I actually feel like I wasted my time trying to give this series an honest chance.
