Honestly some of the stories were quite boring and hard to read through which made me think it was more of a slow read however I also managed to fly through other chapters so I think it’s more medium. I love the way that Angela Carter writes and my favourites are the bloody chamber and the stories of the wolves (mostly because I love the tale of red riding hood aha). Some of this was quite awkward to read however. I think if you don’t look at parts from another view it would seem to be romanticising the body of children which grossed me out but I’m hoping she didn’t mean to do so and if she did it was about calling out gross old men. It was worth reading but some of the stories felt flat and were hard to get through. Also the mom in the bloody chamber is such a yes girl moment and she is the star of this whole book not just that one story

This collection was gifted to me, and I admit I know nothing about author Angela Carter. The writing itself is stunning, if a little verbose at times. The stories live well together, all gothic fantasy with familiar fairytale themes. While many didn’t grab me, I did love The Courtship of Mr. Lyon; The Lady of the House of Love; and The Werewolf. All in all an atmospheric collection that brings back the original darkness of fairytales.
