Read The Company of Wolves for a creative writing class a year ago and really liked it. The prose caught me off more than any other story I read so I decided to sit down and read the rest. For starters, I gotta say, it is really good. There is something about the way that it is written that would be perfect to hear around a campfire. I'm not entirely sure I "got" the exact message behind many of the stories, that'll demand a reread in a few years I think. Even if you don't totally understand, just the writing style is enough to keep you captivated. "The Bloody Chamber", "The Lady of the House of Love", and the astonishingly tonally different "Puss-in-Boots" are some of my favorites.

felt myself constantly thinking it would end awfully for our protagonist, and even after several stories of that not happening, it still kept me on my toes. it definitely achieves what i feel like it set to achieve in giving women agency (narrating in the first person, explaining their motives, making them sympathetic instead of simply objects, being able to get out of dangerous situations), but i felt like sometimes the emphasis on virginity and the white cis female body experience did not work for me. personally.

as feminist literature, it surely is interesting to read about where we were in the 70s, but as a modern text it only halfway holds up. it's a very cis white view of womanhood and therefore i feel like it should be complemented with reading feminist lit by women of color and trans women, even lesbian and bisexual women.
